The Rimon unit is a practically new unit and there is little information about its activities as most of them are classified. The birth of this small unit was due to the inconvenience of Israel’s security forces in the Gaza Strip being able to stop terrorist incursions into their territory. The remedy was the creation of the “Rimon” in order to put an end to infiltration of terrorist groups and arms smuggling, and for this reason special emphasis was placed on undercover work to detect possible terrorist safe havens and weapons caches. Many members of these units operate clandestinely in areas where radical groups are suspected to be active. Through deception, subterfuge, camouflage and prolonged reconnaissance, many of the main hotspots of activity can be detected. In July 2014 the unit fought under the command of Major Tal, in Operation “Protective Margin”. This unit was responsible for the death of 50 terrorists, identifying dozens of tunnels and destroying several of them, It also participated in the fight inside a tunnel in a mosque in Israel. It also gathered valuable intelligence, revealed weapons caches, and worked to eliminate terrorist nests and search for tunnels in the towns of Khirbet Ah’zah Khan Yunis and Rafah. Unit “Rimon” acted independently throughout the operation.
