Lotar Eilat – a glimpse of the anti-terrorist unit in the south of the country
Taking control of a hotel and freeing hostages: a unique glimpse into Eilat’s military special operations unit (LOTAR). “The public doesn’t know us? I don’t care, and for me the status can be maintained. I want people to come to Eilat and relax and celebrate, not to be upset. I’m glad they don’t know me,” says Major A, commander of Eilat’s counter-terrorism unit. Lotar Eilat is an IDF special operations military unit that ensures the safety of Eilat residents and tourists from potential terrorist threats and is also a hostage rescue team. Unlike the other units within the Israeli Army, Lotar Eilat is composed solely of reservists between the ages of 20 and 60 who live in the area of the southern district of Israel and volunteer for this unit. In their regular military service in the Army, some were part of different elite units, and are currently taking advantage of their training and experience to become part of this unit. Due to the covid-19, the unit’s training is done in teams and not in a large number of soldiers, which allows them on the one hand to stay in top shape and also to maintain themselves in terms of health. The training was done in an abandoned building in the port of Eilat. Source: ISRAEL HAYOM
