Pirates in Red Sea make two attempts to get close to cargo ship traveling to Israel before retreating
An attempt by Somali pirates to hijack a cargo ship en route to Israel on Tuesday was foiled by armed Israeli security guards on board.
The ZIM shipping vessel, which sailed from Southeast Asia a few days earlier, was carrying commercial goods bound for Israel when Somali pirates began sailing close to it near the entrance to the Red Sea at the Bab el Mandeb strait, Ynet news reported.
The pirates began to sail close to the ship’s walls and when they became aware of the armed Israeli security guards on board, they retreated and called for reinforcements.
After the pirate ships made a second attempt to approach the vessel, Israeli security guards threatened to use their weapons.
At this point, the pirates decided to withdraw and no weapons were used, according to the report.
The Israeli Ministry of Transport praised Israeli security guards for thwarting the attempted takeover of the aircraft.
